Our first hero of Environment Infection Prevention is Dr. Semelweis. He was a doctor at a maternity clinic in Vienna in 1846. He wanted to find out why so many women were dying in maternity wards with puerperal fever. His curiosity caused him to look at two maternity wards - one was staffed by male doctors and medical students, the other by female midwives.
He found that the women in the maternity ward that was staffed by the male doctors were dying at five times the rate to the women in the midwives clinic.
He looked at the difference between the practices of the midwives and doctors. He found that doctors not only assisted in child birth, but performed autopsies. He hypothesized that if the doctors washed their hands after performing the autopsies, it would cut down on the death rate of new mothers.
He ordered his staff to start cleaning their hands and instruments with disinfectants, which dramatically decreased the rate of childbed fever.
Cleaning instruments and washing hands have saved thousands, if not, millions of lives to this day!
Other heroes have walked in his footsteps, understanding that their job as a cleaning staff really are on the front lines, and also risk their lives cleaning areas ridden with disease, infection and illness.
