How To Clean Washrooms

Keeping a workplace washroom clean and sanitary is a multi-step process.  Not only are there various surfaces to consider, but the order in which they are cleaned is important as well.  There are three basic rules when cleaning and sanitizing; clean from top to bottom, clean from wet to dry and work form the inside of the room out towards the exit.  Equipment like “wet floor” signs will also be necessary.

When a professional cleaning company cleans a washroom, it may look like this:

  • Using all necessary PPE they will first remove debris from in and around toilet and urinals and place any urinal strainers in a bucket of disinfectant. They will remove all visible dirt with a cleaner/disinfectant while allowing solution to remain on surface for the amount of time to effectively kill organisms.

  • They will apply cleaner/disinfectant to all high touch points such as sinks, soap dispensers, door handles etc. and let it work.

  • Next, they will apply a bowl treatment to the inside of the toilet bowl and leave for recommended time.

  • The next step will be to dust the above floor level areas working from top to bottom and dust or sweep the floor from the innermost corner to the door.

  • This will be followed by checking and filling all paper and soap dispensers. (sharps containers may also need to be emptied).   Garbage is emptied then disinfectant is applied to the inside of trash receptacle before replacing liner and allowed to air dry.

  • Walls and stalls are wiped down, removing any visible soils.

  • Any metals areas that were previously disinfected are now polished.

  • ·Mirrors are then wiped or squeegeed to make them crystal clear.

  • Cleaners will then return to areas previously disinfected and left for recommended time and wipe them down to ensure removal of any chemicals.

  • The final cleaning step is to wash and disinfect floors.   “Caution Wet Floor” signs will be placed where needed to prevent slip and fall accidents.

  • When all this has been completed, the cleaners will inspect the washroom to make sure nothing has been missed.

As you can see, there are many steps to ensuring that a washroom is clean and sanitized for a facility’s employees.  Missing any of the steps above could result in the spread of unwanted germs.  At Wright Cleaning Services Inc. we want to see our clients surrounded by the healthiest environment possible.  That is why our staff have been thoroughly trained in proper cleaning and sanitizing procedures.
