How Can Professional Cleaning Help My Bottom Line?
Paying a professional cleaner may not at first seem like something that would positively affect your bottom line, but nothing could be further from the truth. By laying some groundwork and hiring the right team for the job, you can easily transition into a more efficient and financially successful business. For the month of January, I am going to be focusing on some of the areas around your business to shed some light on their cleaning life cycle and maintenance. But before we begin…
LAYING THE FOUNDATION
We can’t measure where we are going until we determine where we are. Proficiency and productivity are key to the success of any business and companies are always trying to find ways to improve their processes. Health and Safety is also a major factor in productivity, so before you hire a cleaner, you will need to consider the following:
What are your quality management standards?
What are the frequencies of workplace tasks, staffing and budget needs?
How will you track the financial impact of cleaning services?
What are the cleaning life cycles of your surfaces
What are your current absenteeism rates like?
Does your company promote the use of environmentally friendly products?
With this information in hand, businesses can move forward to hire the right type of cleaner to clean at the right time of day and monitor the increased productivity.
ABSENTEEISM
According to the 2003 Journal of Occupational Environmental Medicine, the health related lost productive time per year was $225.8 billion. We can only assume that the numbers have increased since then. The causes of the missed time were due to:
Headaches
Colds / Flu
Asthma
Stress
Repetitive motion injuries
Workplace factors
Individual factors
According to a study done by the BMC Infectious Diseases 2006, 6:130, the longer a nosocomial pathogen persists on a surface, the longer it may be a source of transmission and thus endanger a patient, healthcare worker or cleaning professional. The most common nosocomial pathogens may survive on surfaces for months and can be a continuous source of transmission if there is no regular preventative surface disinfection.
PRESENTEEISM
Presenteeism is when an employee comes to work but is not fully functioning due to illness. According to the ISSA, the productivity of such an employee can be reduced by as much as 30% or more, often more costly than absenteeism. There are many negative side effects of Presenteeism including:
Spending additional time on tasks
Decreased quality of work
Lack of initiative
Lowered ability to perform at their peak
Inability to be social with coworkers
Lack of motivation
Cleaning has a real and measurable value when it comes to the health of your employees. Over the next few weeks we will help you understand how the cleaning and maintenance of the different areas of your facility can keep your employees healthy, at work and productive.
