Cleaning For Mental Wellness

Many business owners know that keeping a facility clean and sanitized creates a healthy working environment for their employees. Having healthy employees means fewer sick days and this can dramatically affect their bottom line.  It’s easy to understand how cleaning and disinfecting can reduce germs and prevent physical illness, but what is also true is that it benefits the mental health of employees as well. When people feel better, they are more productive.

Studies show that cluttered and untidy workspaces can impair the mind’s ability to process information. This can make people feel unsettled.  When work environments are clean and sanitary, employees tend to have better concentration, higher morale and stronger motivation. A 2006 report done by Stats Canada found that two thirds of Canadians over the age of 15 were employees who spent 60% of their waking hours at work. In 2011 t1hey also reported that the average time lost on sick days per full time employee was 9.3 days in the public sector and slightly higher in the private sector. It is easy to see that these numbers can hurt a company’s bottom line.  Therefore, whatever can be done to decrease these numbers can be highly beneficial.

Clean environments also create a safer workplace. When employees are happy and facilities are clean and uncluttered, mishaps like slip and fall accidents are less likely to occur.  Slip and fall accidents are the highest reported and yet the easiest incidents to prevent.  If a workplace is clean and organized, employees are much more apt to be aware of anything that is out of place or a possible hazard. They are also more likely to feel calm in a clean environment and concentrate better on the duties they perform.

It isn’t only the mental health of employees that is affected by healthy work environments either. Supervisors and foremen experience less stress when employees are happy and healthy.  Business owners can feel confident that they are doing everything possible to provide for their employees. By keeping their facilities clean, tidy and in good repair, they can prolong the life of their buildings and delay costs that may be associated with a move.
