It All Starts With Clean Hands
All through the pandemic we have heard over and over again how important it is to wash your hands. This is something that we in the cleaning industry are very aware of. We’re told that frequent hand washing will kill viruses (including Covid-19), but just exactly what happens when we wash our hands that kills those nasty germs?
Viruses are made up of genetic material that is wrapped in a fatty coating. When we apply soap, the lipid membrane is disrupted and it causes it to fall apart. We’ve all seen the little spiked balls that have represented Covid-19 in graphics that talk about the virus. These spikes help the virus invade human cells. When soap is applies and the membrane falls apart, the spikes are lost and cannot remain active. These fragments are then washed away when we rinse the soap off our hands.
We are also told to make sure that we don’t wash our hands too quickly and make sure to scrub them well. The reason we want to wash our hands for a long enough period of time is that by scrubbing them well (including between our fingers and around the ends of our finger nails) we can dislodge any viral particles that may be hanging on for dear life. The best soap in the world won’t help if we don’t scrub our hands well. It is said that proper hand washing can reduce the chance of respiratory infections by 20%.
We have also been told that in the absence of soap and water, we can use hand sanitizer to combat viruses. A hand sanitizer that meets health guidelines can also disrupt the lipid membrane. The only difference is that without anything to wash the particles away, they can remain on the skin. This is why whenever possible, it is best to wash your hands with soap and water.
Proper hand washing can not only combat Covid-19 but can also prevent many other types of sickness from developing. The incidents of colds and flu can be drastically reduced by maintaining good hand hygiene One of the side effects of dealing with Covid could just be that we are all more aware of the things we need to do in order to stay healthier.
